Además de las tareas domésticas (comprar, cocinar, lavar, tejer, coser, ocuparse de la descendencia, los ancianos y los enfermos) las mujeres en el Próximo Oriente Antiguo también trabajaban fuera del hogar, aunque esta realidad haya sido minusvalorada u omitida. Las diversas fuentes nos muestran gran variedad de oficios y profesiones, ejercidas tanto por hombres como por mujeres, pero los textos legales reglamentan el trabajo femenino sólo en tres profesiones que son exclusivas de las mujeres: nodriza, tabernera y prostituta. El artículo explica qué tipo de trabajos realizaban las mujeres en el II y I milenios a.C.: trabajadora agrícola, maga/curandera, tejedora, comerciante, peluquera, partera, etc. y por qué al legislador sólo le preocupa regular el ejercicio de la tabernera, la nodriza y la prostituta.

In addition to the housework (shopping, cooking, washing, knitting, sewing, raising children, or care for elder and sick people), women in Ancient Near East worked outside the home too, although this fact has been omitted or undervalued. Various sources show a wide range of trades and occupations, carried by both men and women, but laws regulate women's work in only three occupations which are exclusively feminine: wet nurse and nursemaid, tavern keeper and prostitute. The article discusses what kind of jobs were performed by women in 1st and 2nd millennium BCE: agricultural worker, magician / healer, weaver, shopkeeper, hairdresser, midwife, etc., and why legislators were only interested in regulating the tavern keeping, the nursing and the prostitution.
