La universidad franquista se regularía por la Ley de Odernación Universitaria de 1943, en vigor hasta 1970. En este artículo la autora sostiene que, lejos de excluir a las mujeres explicitamente de la educación superior, el régimen promueve un ideal de mujer católica o “true Catholic womanhood” intrínsecamente opuesto al sujeto universitario definido en la letra de la ley. La educación media que en los años cincuenta se regula mediante dos reformas legales, se diseña de tal modo que a las jóvenes se las desanimaba a estudiar o si lo hacian a elegir una carrera apropiada a su sexo. El artículo se centra en los años cincuenta, cuando el franquismo entra en la transición de la autarquía al consumismo y las relaciones de género se han de redefinir para amoldarse a las circunstancias.

The Spanish university under Francoism was regulated by Law of 1943. This law defined the scholar identity the next thirty years. In this article the author argues that although the law did not exclude women explicitly from higher learning the definition of “True Catholic womanhood” was intrinsically opposite to the scholar subjectivity. Through a Foucaldian reading of the LOU of 1943 as well as the laws issued in the 1950s to regulate the middle education women were discouraged to pursue higher learning or in the best case pursue a career appropriate for her sex. The article focuses in the period of the 1950s when the regime experiences a transition from autarchy to consumerism and gender roles need to be redefined for the new economy.
