English
hepatocellular carcinomadefinition: primary adenocarcinoma of the liver cells (hepatocytes) that ranges from a well-differentiated tumor with cells difficult to distinguish from normal hepatocytes to a poorly differentiated neoplasm. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease (localized resectable, localized unresectable, advanced and recurrent) and includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, chemoembolization, liver transplant, hypothermia and biological therapy. This type of hepatomas is associated with prior exposure to the virus causing hepatitis B. Hepatocellular carcinoma is very rare in the United States and western Europe, but it is one of the most common cancers in eastern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. It occurs most frequently in males and, racially, in non-whites. (en)
