English
testicular cancerterm type: main entry term
reliability code: 10
number: singular
part of speech: noun
definition: rare cancer of the testicles, the male reproductive glands, which usually arises in just one testicle. The two main types of testicular cancer are seminoma and nonseminoma, although there are other rare forms of nonseminoma such as embryonal cell carcinomas, teratomas, yolk sac tumors, and choriocarcinomas. Risks factors of testicular cancer are cryptorchidism, Klinefelter's syndrome, gonadal aplasia, and various forms of hermaphroditism. It is recommended that men do a monthly testicular self-examination. Diagnostic procedures include blood and urine tests, X rays, CT scans, IVP, lymphagiography, ultrasound, and MRI. The most frequent treatment for testicular cancer is surgery, especially radical inguinal orchiectomy, although radiation therapy and chemotherapy may also be used. Testicular cancer accounts for about 1% of all the cancers occurring in men and is the most common cancer occurring in men aged 20 to 34.
