Laboratory of Biomaterials Optics
Our history
The Laboratory of Biomaterials Optics (LBO) is part of the Department of Optics at the University of Granada. Established in 2007, the group is led by Prof. María del Mar Pérez and includes Prof. Razvan Ghinea, Prof. Juan de la Cruz Cardona, Prof. Ana Ionescu, Prof. Javier Ruiz, Prof. María Tejada, and Rafael Vázquez.
Our current research primarily focuses on the optical characterization of biomaterials (color, absorption, transmission, scattering), exploring the optical properties of biogenerated tissues through Tissue Engineering (e.g., artificial corneas, artificial skin), investigating chromatic discrimination and translucency thresholds, and developing experimental methods and artificial intelligence techniques for measuring optical properties.
To achieve our goals, we adopt a multidisciplinary approach to all research questions and collaborate closely with experts from diverse fields such as computer engineering, dentistry, and tissue engineering. In addition to active collaborations within the University of Granada, much of our work is conducted in partnership with researchers worldwide. Beyond academic research, we maintain strong ties with various dental manufacturing companies, with whom we have carried out numerous projects.
