Panama 2010. "Subduction Zones and Bent Orogenic Belts of the Caribbean". February 8-11, 2010. Joint meeting of IGCP projects 546 "Subduction Zones of the Caribbean" and 574 "Bending and Bent Orogens, and Continental Ribbons"

Intro

During the last year, a wealth of new data has been collected in Panamá, including new radiometric ages, paleomagnetic investigations, geochemical analysis and field mapping. In this field trip we will put the new information in a regional context where the trailing edge of the Caribbean Plate enjoyed multiple episodes of arc magmatism and transtensional deformation.

IGCP 546 "Subduction Zones of the Caribbean" and IGCP 574 "Bending and Bent Orogens, and Continental Ribbons"  offer three events:

  1. February 8, 2010. The Workshop “Subduction Zones and Bent Orogenic Belts of the Caribbean, seeks to unravel the complex geologic evolution of the Caribbean region focusing on deep earth processes taking place at ancient and active convergent plate margins, including orocline formation, and on the role played by continental ribbons. The main aims of the Workshop are to (1) systematically characterize and compare the subduction products, both mechanical and thermal, such as high-pressure belts, tectonic mélanges, accretionary wedges, accreted terranes, volcanic arcs, and fracture zones all along the Caribbean realm, northern South America and Nuclear Central America; (2) assess the role of continental ribbons, such as the Panamanian Isthmus, in the tectonic evolution of the Caribbean region; and (3) investigate the origins and evolution of map-scale bends of orogenic belts, volcanic arcs and continental ribbons within the context of Caribbean paleogeography.

  2. February 9-11, 2009. The associated Field Trip "From arc growth to orocline formation: The record from the Panama Canal and East Panama".will serve as the basis for the description of the geologic architecture of the plate margin and associated basins in the region, with special focus on volcanic and plutonic products of subduction of the Nazca plate below the Caribbean plate.

Cost, Funding and Registration

As a preliminary budget for the seminar and field trip, the registration is approximately US$ 350 per person. This would cover transportation, lunches and beverages. This registration fee must be paid in cash at the workshop.

We have pre-reserved rooms in the El Panama Hotel (located at: Via España y Via Veneto). We will strongly suggest that all participants stay in this hotel. The Hotel El Panama costs: Single room US$143.00, Double room US$165.00. (Includes daily breakfast, cable internet in room and taxes). We can send a taxi to pick you up if you want. It costs around $25 dollars. [NOTE: Panama carnival starts on March 13th. If you plan to stay longer, please be aware that probably hotels will be busy, as well as some streets and highways. It is a very particular time!].

Funds provided by IUGS-UNESCO to IGCP 546 will be used to help cover the expenses of the attendants to the workshop and associated field trip. However, because we will probably not have had received funding from IUGS-UNESCO by February 2010, we will probably not have the chance to support attendance in advance. We shall send to the attendants the funds after the meeting. Contact project leaders Antonio García-Casco or Uwe Martens for application.

IGCP 574 members should contact project leaders Stephen T. Johnston, Arlo B. Weil and Gabi Gutierrez-Alonso for support.

IMPORTANT. Deadline for registration is 15th of January. Panama 2010 Registration and Hotel Reservation (). Send this form to Antonio García Casco agcasco@ugr.es, Camilo Montes MontesC@si.edu, and Luz Helena Oviedo oviedol@si.edu. This is important to request the permits to access the Canal Area and to confirm hotel reservation.
