Project Description

Silicosis was one of the main occupational health problems in Spain during the 20th century, not only because of the number of workers who suffered severe disability and premature death but also in terms of the extent of health care facilities and compensation schemes developed to address its consequences. Nevertheless, silicosis has received no attention from Spanish historians of medicine. The aim of this project is to analyse the emergence of social and medical concerns about silicosis in Spain, its recognition as an occupational disease, and the development and enforcement of preventive programs, health care facilities and compensation schemes. The period covered by the project commences in 1930, when the First International Silicosis Conference in Johannesburg triggered international concerns about this occupational health hazard, and concludes in 1975 with the end of the Franco regime.
