myelodysplastic syndromes | definition: disorders characterised by a deficiency in the number of blood cells caused by a damaged bone marrow. They can occur as primary cancer or after treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy for other diseases. Symptoms include fatigue, anemia, bleeding, and bruising. The mainstay of treatment is supportive care.
There are five types of myelodysplastic syndromes: refractory anemia, refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation, and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.
