The Andalusian Earth Sciences Institute (IACT) is a highly innovative research centre which belongs to the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Granada (UGR). Over 130 individuals conduct research at the Institute, constantly striving to make key breakthroughs in the field of earth sciences. They actively contribute to the development of cutting-edge technology, and work to promote the transfer of knowledge acquired at the centre to society at large.
A multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach is taken at our centre, encompassing the following scientific areas: the analysis of lithospheric processes which lead to the formation of orogens and basins, the geological, geophysical, geochemical and biogeochemical processes that take place in marine environments, the structure, composition and properties of minerals and rocks, and crystallographic problems ranging from macromolecular crystallography to pattern formation.
At the centre, we also work closely with other national and international institutes, organisations and businesses, in order to achieve complete integration into the European Research area. Additionally we provide our researchers and teachers with world-class training, enabling them to reach their full potential as academics working in the field. We also strive to promote the practical application of our research developments by working closely with businesses from the industrial sector and by disseminating our research findings in international journals.
