General travel information to Cuba by Sprachcaffe Reisen

(Please, note that these recommendations are for the general tourist, and many of them do not strictly apply in this organized trip).

Travel check list

Money

  • Bring cash with you, preferably dollars and/or euros.

  • Change cash preferably with your guides, in the Casa Particular or people you trust (as a rule, always ask first).

  • Changing money on the street is possible but never give the money first.

  • Withdrawing money and changing money in banks is expensive.

  • There can be very long waiting times at banks or ATMs.

  • ATMs can quickly run out of cash, especially outside Havana.

  • Paying by card is only possible in state-run stores or restaurants.

  • Meal expenses are usually around 10-20 USD x meal.

  • Basic daily expenses might be around 40 - 50 USD.

Internet and communication

  • There is Wi-Fi only at hotels.

  • Travellers can apply for a cuban SIM card online here https://suenacuba.com/tourist_sim_card_cuba_buy/ and collect it directly at the airport at Cuba Cel desks.

  • Many applications and AppStore (Iphone) cannot be used in Cuba. Be sure to download all necessary applications before traveling.

  • Install a VPN before traveling to Cuba, otherwise online payments cannot be completed.

  • Download Maps.me (https://maps.me/) or organicmaps.app (https://organicmaps.app/) with the corresponding map to navigate in Cuba. It can be used without internet once the map is downloaded.

Infrastructure

  • There are regular (controlled) power cuts. Mainly outside Havana and the large hotel chains areas.

  • Bring a power bank, rechargeable headlamps and torches.

  • The most affordable way to get around Havana is by so-called shared cabs (collectivos). These cabs are normal cars that always follow the same route. You can get in or out at any time (costs approx. 300 CUP)

  • Many Cuban private taxis charge higher prices for tourists. To avoid this, you can use the Cuban Uber app. La Nave (https://lanave.app/).

  • In Varadero and Havana there is a city/tourist bus that runs throughout the city. It costs 5€ for the whole day and can be used as often as you like.

Food and Health

  • It can always happen that some food/drinks are not available, even in large hotels.

  • There are almost no medicines or medical utensils in Cuba, bring your own essentials for headaches, diarrhea, etc.

  • Restaurants often close relatively early (between 9 pm and 10 pm).

  • Do not drink tap water (brushing your teeth is ok).

Weather and clothing

  • Cuba is a tropical country with high humidity. Bring light and fresh clothes. Linen is highly recommended.

  • In the evenings it can be a bit chilly depending on the season. A light sweater is usually sufficient.

  • Some places like museums or similar may not allow entry in sandals. Bring some closed shoes.

  • If you plan to do trails or sports activities, bring appropriate footwear.

  • Bring mosquito repellent, in some coastal areas this will be helpful.

  • Bring safety jacket if you plan walking/running along roads.
