Field Trip Guide ( 6.5 Mb)
Because Cuba records the tectonic interactions of the Caribbean and North American plates since the Early Cretaceous until the late Eocene, the study of these processes and materials in Cuba is one of the major targets of IGCP 546. The Field Trip "Subduction and arc complexes of central Cuba" will serve as the basis for the description of the geologic architecture of the Cretaceous plate margin and the latest-Cretaceous Tertiary orogenic belt and associated basins in the region, with special focus on high pressure complexes (tectonic blocks of serpentinite mélanges of the "northern ophiolite belt", Escambray complex), obducted low-P ophiolitic bodies ("northern ophiolite belt"), and the deep metamorphic roots of the Cretaceous volcanic arc (Mabujina amphibolite complex).

REGISTRATION
Send an email to geociencias@igp.gms.minbas.cu (Kenya Nuñez Cambra) to ask for detailed instructions.ACCOMMODATION
Days 21-23 Santa Clara Libre Hotel (Santa Clara). Day 24: Hanabanailla Hotel (Hanabanilla Damp, west of Manicaragua). Reservations will be made based on your request of double or single room. The price of accommodation in these hotels will be arranged by the organizers. We will keep you posted.FOOD
Booking will include breakfast in the hotels. All attendants must take care of their own lunch (to be held every day in the field) and dinner. Dinner offered by hotels is more expensive than (and probably not as good as) those of (legal) private restaurants and rent houses. In the latter, a good dinner will cost around 10-15 CUC/person (drinks will certainly increase the cost in any case!).VISA
Visitors from most countries need a tourist visa to Cuba. But please check with the Ministry of Foreign Relations (MINREX) and/or your local Cuban embassy. Nationals of the USA are subject to the Cuban assets control regulations from US Government. US law enforcement authorities have increased enforcement of these regulations at US airports and pre-clearance facilities in third countries. If you need an official invitation letter, please email Antonio García-Casco or Manuel Iturralde-Vinent.FUNDING
Our intention is to pay as much as possible of the costs of the field-trip through our IGCP 546 funds. However, and based in our previous experience, IUGS may not have maid payment of the annual assignment by March. These funds will probably amount 4000 USD (as in the last two years) of which 2500 have been allocated to the trip. We are finding out a way to get this money in advance, so that the cost per person will be reduced a bit.
