Mudejar architecture in Andalusia from a gender perspective
(Mª Elena Díez Jorge)

In this line of research we will be analysing certain Mudejar spaces in Andalusia from a gender perspective, exploring patronage and the use of the different spaces. In historiographical terms the question of different use of space according to gender has not been a specific subject of research, or even the spaces occupied by women. The possible collaboration between the two genders in the patronage of these buildings has not been explored either. The rare allusions to women have been made more from the perspective of an object than of a subject. We therefore believe that historiographically speaking a serious reflection is required on some of the most important examples of Mudejar architecture in Andalusia, as research has so far focussed essentially on the process of acculturation and integration between ethnic/cultural and religious groups. For this purpose we will be investigating the royal sites ( los sitios reales ) from their origins in al-Andalus and moving forward through time with a view to establishing a comparison between the al-Andalus period and its transformations, interventions and extensions in the Christian period from a gender perspective.
