English
hepatomaterm type: main entry term
definition: tumor arising in the liver that can be benign but is most frequently malignant. Benign hepatomas can usually be surgically removed. Malignant hepatomas are mostly hepatocellular carcinomas but they can also be hepatoblastomas, cholangiocarcinoma or angiosarcoma. Liver cancer is associated with cirrhosis of the liver (either from alcoholism or hepatitis B), exposure to toxins such as aflatoxin, azo compounds (nitrogen compounds), thorotrast (a contrast medium formerly used in some X-ray exams), and polyvinylchlorides. Symptoms, which do not usually appear in its early stages, include weight loss, malaise, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling and pain, jaundice, fever, and ascites. When cancer has spread to another part of the body, pain can be felt there as well. Diagnostic tests used in this type of cancer are blood test for alpha-fetoprotein, liver scan, angiography, laparoscopy, bone scan, x-rays, CT scan and ultrasound, core needle biopsy (which is sometimes used for a definitive diagnosis), and exploratory surgery (if bleeding occurs). Spanish
hepatomaterm type: main entry term
