From Košice to Danišovce The eastern part of Slovakia is full of historical monuments, caves, beautiful nature and cosy villages. On our short way from Košice to Danišovce we will pass several interesting places. Here are some of the most attractive ones: Prešov is the third
largest city in Slovakia, which lies at the confluence of the rivers Torysa and
Sekčov. Its history dates back to the Stone Age, but the first written record comes
from the 13th century. It is a home to the Head of the Slovak Greek Catholic Church,
and the city features many old churches and temples. The most important
monuments include the 15th-16th century early Gothic-style Co-Cathedral of
Saint Nicholas. Malý Šariš is
a village nearPrešov Region not far from VeľkýŠarišwhich
is well-known for a ruined Gothic and Renaissance era stone castle, the Šariš Castle. Fričovce is a small village known mostly for the Renaissance mansion which was built in 1623. The mansion Fričovce is unique for its figural and vegetal ornamental sgraffito embellishment, created by Martin Waxman. Lipovce is famous for a cave called Zládiera. The cave is unique especially thanks to a very special access into it. Visitors are equipped with protective helmets and are accompanied by the guide. There is no electricity in the cave and that′s why visitors have to use traditional cavern carbide lamps or their own light. Krompachy is a town with a rich mining and metallurgical history. It is well-known for its ski centre -Plejsy.The ski runs are situated on the northern slopes of KrompachyHill (1025 meters above sea level). The Spiš Castle is
a castle the ruins of which form one of the largest castle sites in Central
Europe. The castle was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in
1993 (together with the adjacent locations of Spišská Kapitula, Spišské Podhradie
and Žehra). Spišské Podhradie is
situated at the foot of the hill of Spiš Castle. Spišská Nová Ves
is a town located southeast of the High Tatras. The town is surrounded by
foothills of the Levočskévrchy mountains from the north and the
Spišško-gemerskérudohorie mountain range from the south. Levoča is a medieval town which has a well preserved town wall, a Renaissance church with the highest wooden altar in the world, carved by Master Paul of Levoča, and many other Renaissance buildings. On 28 June 2009, Levoča was added by UNESCO to its World Heritage List. Slovak Paradise National Park is one of the nine national parks in Slovakia. Eleven national nature reservations and eight nature reservations are situated in the park. The park offers about 300 km of hiking paths, often equipped with ladders, chains and bridges. The Slovak Paradise contains about 350 caves, but only the Dobšinská Ice Cave, which is since 2000 a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is open to the public. National Parks of the High Tatras is situated close to the Slovak Paradise National Park. National Parks of the High Tatras were founded in 1949. They cover a unique protected area of flora and fauna among the tallest European high mountains situated north of the Alps. |
