CIMAS, the 1st International Congress on Mountains, which will be held in Granada from the 8 to the 10 of March 2018 and will be chaired by King Felipe VI of Spain, aims to promote economic sustainability, ecological diversity, and respect for the environment in mountainous regions.
The world’s mountainous regions are facing considerable changes and challenges due to the disparate effects of globalization. On the one hand, economic progress calls for the introduction of new paradigms to guarantee sustainable social development, while on the other hand, the consequences of climate change call for greater emphasis on diminishing its effects and mitigating the causes underlying it.
Ecotourism, rural tourism, and winter sports and sports tourism are all significant economic drivers for towns and communities in mountainous regions, as are the natural resources generated by biodiversity. Consequently, it is essential that biodiversity is sufficiently protected in order to guarantee its conservation for future generations.
A prime example of the convergence between protected areas and key spaces that contribute to regional economic development is the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This high-mountain area boasts the most southerly ski station in Europe, which is simultaneously located within a Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve. Accordingly, the Congress will be set against the backdrop of this natural landscape and will critically examine, through multidisciplinary and transversal approaches, the delicate balance between sustainable economic development and environmental conservation, using the experiences and knowledge gained to extrapolate to other regions.
