On 27 September 2019, European Researchers’ Night—an event coordinated by the European Commission—will bring together over 2,000 researchers from 8 Andalusian cities to undertake over 500 fascinating activities throughout the region. This year, European Researchers’ Night will take place in over 370 cities in 30 countries.

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Granada (UGR) has found that, in contrast to scientific thinking to date, higher levels of physical activity are not linked to a greater volume or activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT). BAT is a thermogenic organ that burns glucose and fats, releasing the energy that is produced in the form of heat.

An international team of scientists demonstrates that polyacrylate hydrogels create the support and microenvironment necessary for the growth and maintenance of cartilage cells (chondrocytes), and could be optimal candidates for use in clinical practice. The results have been published in the prestigious journal Acta Biomaterialia.  

UGRTerm, the Spanish-English language resource that was launched in 2018, contains the official nomenclature of the University of Granada and a considerable number of terms and expressions related to research and higher education. It also features terminology from spheres such as the social sciences and humanities; law; economics and statistics; information, communication and public events; public infrastructure; and politics, government and administration. The resource now contains over 40,000 terms.

An international team of scientists, including researchers from the University of Granada and the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), has identified five new rapidly-oscillating Ap (roAp) stars. Two of these stars are of particular interest: one of them is cooler than the norm, and the other is the fastest–pulsating roAp star discovered to date: it completes an oscillation every 4.7 minutes.

Ángel Gil, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Granada, has recently coordinated a study reviewing worldwide scientific literature on the role of dairy products in health and in the prevention of chronic diseases (cardiovascular, metabolic syndrome, colon or bladder cancer, and type 2 diabetes). The review also covers the effects of dairy products on growth, bone mineral density, generation of muscle mass, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The University of Granada is pleased to announce that our 15th International Staff Training Week (STW) will be held from 1 to 5 July 2019. Over 140 administrative officers and managers from our partner universities will take part in the STW through the Erasmus+ Programme, with participants from 30 non-EU countries.

ARQUS, the European University Alliance that brings together the universities of Bergen, Granada, Graz, Leipzig, Lyon, Padova and Vilnius, has been endorsed by the European Commission as part of the group of pioneering Alliances in the European Universities Initiative.

As part of the III Conference on International Quality Labels in Spain and Latin America, which took place on 19 June at the headquarters of the Spanish Institute of Engineering, the University of Granada received prestigious quality accreditation certificates for three of its degrees.
