Brief Description:

Doctor (1993) in English Philology by the University of Granada (Spain) with a dissertation on a communicative theory of metaphor.

Tenured Lecturer of linguistics in the English Department at the University of Granada.

Assistant teacher at Eton College (1989) and visiting scholar at Nottingham University (1991).

I systematically work with the philosopher of language Esther Romero (since 1993). We currently share a research project on meaning and pragmatic processes funded by the Spanish government.

Research Interests

My research has been circumscribed to the field of pragmatics and its relations with syntax and semantics. The topic of metaphor and its justification in verbal communication have marked in one way or another my trajectory, although recently metonymy has taken an important part of my attention. Related to metonymy, I have been increasingly interested in the referential use of noun phrases, noun phrase fragments, ellipsis and informational prominence. As a whole, however, this study is framed within the domain of what is said with verbal utterances. The delimitation of this domain with that of implicatures not only has always been of great significance for me but it also currently occupies the spare the time allowed by the topics above.
